“A Papiamentu Evening”
Instituto Alsa Papiamentu, organized Saturday night
a very successful discourse-debate evening with
the theme Language and Innovation.
Speakers of different organizations dealing with
education place their light on the various ways that language can influence the innovation process.
Kopera ku Mucha (KOKUMU) represented by Yasmine Maduro, a Curacao teacher working in a super
innovative school in Holland gave the public some interesting information about the form of education
called “Everyday Pause” Siña di bèrdè mes.
Marnell Bosma of the Caribbean Integral Institute
talked about “Learning from the Soul” the way of
learning where feelings are highly recognized and
worked upon. The correct and discriminative use of language is imperative during this process.
Dr. Martha Dijkhoff of Dijkhoff Learning Unlimited
spoke about the role of the teachers in the new
system where languages such as Papiamentu and
Dutch must be worked upon from another perspective.
Diana Domacasse Lebacs of Curacao-ASCD let the
public feel the frustration of entering school with a container of information, feelings, knowledge and
thoughts in the mother tongue and having to put all
this away to begin learning in another completely
unknown language and its implications for the
language development of the student.

Opening Office Curaçao-ASCD
The board of directors of Curaçao-ASCD can look with great satisfaction back upon two successful workshop days during the start-conference organized by some school boards of Curaçao.
The workshop Community Conversation was presented by the ASCD-Worldwide Regional Director for the Caribbean Area, Gail Clarck Dickson and the Curaçao-ASCD members Carisia Balootje-Biliosa and Diana Domacasse Lebacs.
Community Conversation is a form of conversation where a group of people come together to talk about an important community theme/issue with guiding questions as starting point. The theme of the start conference this year was “The Whole Child”.
The board of directors of Curaçao-ASCD had more reasons to be happy. Curaçao-ASCD opened recently an office in the Cameleon Shopping Mall at Schottegatweg. The opening ceremony was done by Gail Clarck Dickson and Curaçao-ASCD president for 2008-2009 Sahayra Braun Nisbeth. This office space is a wonderful geste of Maduro & Curiels Banc of Curaçao.
Curaçao-ASCD can now continue its work on behalf of the Educational Community of Curaçao and the Whole Child Initiative with more enthusiasm and zeal.
